It sounds ridiculous, but it’s somehow so real. I was riding one of those electric scooters the other day, and I realized I had to dodge the cracks in the pavement if I didn’t want my phone to fly off and break (I swear I thought it had, the first time I hit one).

And there is so much more to this than it seems, no? “What’s the issue with pavement, Milo?” I’ll tell you what the issue is. Perfect pavement doesn’t tell a story! When I look at these shitty roads, up here in the northeast, I remember all the shit-dodging I had to do when I walked around in Buenos Aires. It feels good, believe it or not, when not everything around you is designed to work as intended 100% of the time.
Obviously, it’s not just the pavement. I’ve been told my whole life that I shouldn’t romanticize things too much “because they always disappoint you.” And you know what? They’re WRONG! I thought I would die of excitement when I went skiing. And then I went skiing, and it was even BETTER than I imagined. I thought maybe Rhode Island, of all places, would be so much less than I expected. I was ready for it too—I had my homesickness on speed dial and all. And then, unexplainably, I got more than I bargained for. I got blue skies that don’t feel suffocating. I got leaves that float down slowly, just like the movies. I got cracked pavement.

I’ll take the opportunity to leave this blurb here, for whoever needs it: Big Temperance wants you to contain your excitement, so they can sell you more stoicism. Don’t fall for it, you idiot! Go crazy!
I guess I’ll leave off with an update on my living situation, only because I was myself so surprised by it that I don’t know how to properly bring it up in conversation: Ever since I moved, I have somehow managed to pick up an obscene amount of good habits. Yes, you read that right. I’m sleeping at reasonable hours now, and reading a lot more, and walking around a lot more. I started a skincare routine, and I tamed my curls (a feat I did not know I was capable off). If change feels like jumping into a big abyss, I suggest you use that big brain of yours to turn that vertical acceleration into some horizontal velocity 😎
Bye now. Stay frosty.
